Most siding repairs start with something visible: a panel blown off in a windstorm, vinyl cracked by a snowblower or a stone from the mower, buckling on a south wall, or a gap at a corner. The repair itself is often small. The part that matters is what the damage let in. Water that has been running behind siding for a season can soften sheathing and stain the inside of the wall, and a good repair checks for it.

Matching is the common problem. Siding fades with sun, and colours and profiles are discontinued, so a new panel from the store can look wrong next to a ten-year-old wall. Contractors handle this in a few ways: borrowing matching panels from a hidden wall and putting the new ones there, matching as closely as possible, or re-siding one full face of the house so the change falls at a corner.

Wavy or buckled vinyl is usually an installation problem rather than a material one. Vinyl has to be nailed loosely so it can expand and contract with temperature; nailed tight, it buckles in summer and can crack in winter. In that case re-hanging the affected courses is the repair, not just replacing panels.

What to Tell the Contractor

  • What happened and when: wind, impact, ice, or damage you have just noticed.
  • The siding material and roughly how old it is.
  • Photos of the damaged area and of a full wall, so colour and profile can be matched.
  • Any water marks, mould or soft drywall on the inside of that wall.
  • Whether it is part of an insurance claim.

Siding repair: Questions, Answered

Sometimes exactly, often only closely. Siding fades and profiles get discontinued. Common fixes are moving panels from a less visible wall to the damaged area and putting the new panels where they will not be noticed, or re-siding one full face of the house. Photos of the whole wall help the contractor plan this.
Usually because it was nailed too tight. Vinyl needs room to expand and contract with temperature, and when it cannot move it buckles in heat and can crack in cold. The repair is normally re-hanging those courses correctly.
Often, depending on your policy and deductible. Take photos before anything is repaired, call your insurer, and tell the contractor it is a claim so the quote is written in a way the adjuster can use.
Signs include staining, peeling paint or soft drywall on the inside of the wall, a musty smell, and loose or swollen sheathing where a panel is off. A contractor can open the area around the damage and check before closing it up.
